Patch Management Without the Chaos
Updates feel disruptive, but unpatched software is how many breaches begin. A simple routine keeps both risks in check.
Software vendors publish fixes for security flaws regularly, and attackers study those fixes to learn how to exploit systems that have not yet applied them. The gap between release and installation is when you are most exposed.
Know what you run
You cannot patch what you do not know exists. Keep an up-to-date list of computers, servers, network devices and key applications, including who is responsible for each.
Set a rhythm
- Apply critical security fixes within days, not months.
- Schedule routine updates for a fixed maintenance window.
- Test on a small group first for business-critical systems.
- Keep a rollback option in case an update causes trouble.
Retire what cannot be patched
Old software that no longer receives updates is a permanent open door. Plan its replacement, and in the meantime isolate it from the rest of your network.
