Why Small Businesses Are Prime Targets for Cyberattacks
Attackers do not need to be after you personally. Automation means any business with an exposed weakness is a candidate.
Many owners assume criminals only chase large corporations. In reality, most attacks are automated: scripts scan the internet for exposed services, reused passwords and unpatched software, and they do not care how big the company behind them is.
Smaller teams, fewer safeguards
A business with ten or fifty staff rarely has a dedicated security person. Responsibilities fall to whoever is best with computers, and security becomes a side task. Attackers know this, and they treat smaller organisations as a faster, lower-risk route to money.
You are a stepping stone
Even if your own data seems unremarkable, your email accounts, invoices and supplier relationships are valuable. A compromised mailbox lets an attacker send convincing payment requests to your customers and partners.
Where to start
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for email and finance tools.
- Keep a list of every system that holds customer or financial data.
- Install updates promptly and remove software nobody uses.
- Agree who to call, and what to do, if something looks wrong.
None of these steps are expensive. Together they remove the easy openings that automated attacks depend on.
